Be still and know that I am God.” Ps. 46:10
Stillness … as you become quiet within yourself, let go of all your busyness and distractions. As you breathe the Spirit in, slowly breathe out all your self-centeredness,all your petty concerns.
Consider the character of John the Baptist featured in today’s Gospel. He shows me how to become authentically transformed into a new kind of person. He does this by stripping himself bare of all pretenses, and putting the spotlight totally on Jesus. He becomes free of the tyranny of his ego. Ego stands for Edging God Out.
John the Baptist understands this. Prayerfully listen to his words: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.” John is willing to empty himself of everything that stands in the way of his being consumed by God.
“Come, Lord Jesus.” Come and strip me of my ego. Come and give me the grace to “stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals” especially in “the least of these” of the world where I live. Come and grant me the grace to Edge You In.
Reflection: How do I edge God out of my life? How do I edge God in?
